The plane trees bordering the Canal du Midi are an iconic image and for some years have been infected with an incurable disease, resulting in thousands being cut down. There are about 42000 trees, with 13000 under threat and from Monday another 2200 will be felled between Castelnaudary and the coast.
Trees will be replanted, but with various species to avoid the possibility of cross infection.
